Social Media and the 2011 Oscars

Social media may be the true starlet of the 83rd Annual Academy Awards this Sunday.  When the biggest names in the movie industry walk down the red carpet, viewers from around the world will have the chance to stay tuned online or through Oscars’ own iPhone and iPad app.

Last year, 13.3% of Oscar viewers used the Internet via laptop or mobile device during the awards show.  This year has seen other major sporting and awards events, including Super Bowl XLV and the GRAMMYs, as well as marketers embrace social media to engage and communicate with viewers.

We’re going to show you a few ways to find additional Oscar coverage online and stay connected during the red carpet event.

Oscar.com

ABC and the Academy Awards will begin coverage on Oscar.com at 3:30pm PT, when movie stars and starlets arrive on the red carpet.  The site will offer live coverage once the event starts, a “My Oscar Picks” prediction game, live tweets and a chance to enter the “Thank You Cam” where Oscar winners make post acceptance remarks.

Viewers can also pay $4.99 for an “all access” experience that offers additional live streams and a “360 cam.”  Users can change camera views and watch the post-show Governors Ball.

Oscars App

“Oscars Backstage Pass” app is available on iTunes for $.99 and is compatible with the iPhone, iPod and iPad.  The app offers viewers a chance to watch live from the red carpet and inside during the event.

People.com

People.com will offer live camera, blogging and online coverage during the ceremony as well as a trivia game, “Red Carpet Trivia Live.”  The trivia games’ sponsor, Sprint, will give away a $10,000 cash prize.  The real-time trivia questions will be synched with the celebrities and awards categories being introduced on screen.

Twitter

You can follow the official Twitter handle of the 83rd Academy Awards at @oscar_awards. On top of that, this year’s movie fans have the opportunity to submit questions that will be answered by Oscar nominees and other celebrities during the pre-show, “Oscars Red Carpet Live,” hosted by Robin Roberts, Tim Gunn, Krista Smith and Maria Menounos  via tweets with the hash tags #ask #Oscars.

Do you want to make your predictions on who will win a certain Oscar?  You can with Tweet Your Predictions.  The web app let’s you choose films, actors, directors and more  by clicking the film poster or icon once you sign into the application through Twitter.  Once you’ve made your predictions you can tweet them out and view how other users have voted.

With all of these interactive ways to connect before and during the awards ceremony, will you spend the majority of your time watching the show live on the television or via web applications and social media platforms?
