Red Bull consistently pushes the envelope in the sports marketing arena, and their promotion of 2010 PGA Rookie of the Year, Rickie Fowler, leading up to the 2011 US Open at Congressional Country Club in Bethesda, Maryland is no different.
On Saturday June 11th, in an event called Red Bull Capital Drive, Fowler will head down to the Georgetown waterfront at 5pm EST and blindly hit chip shots from a platform onto a custom built green floating in Georgetown’s famous fountain.
Red Bull’s first signing in golf was 16 year LPGA phenom Lexi Thompson which the energy drink then followed up this year with Rickie Fowler on the men’s side. Fowler has burst onto the scene in his short PGA career thus far, claiming the 2010 Rookie of the Year award from the PGA, joining the 2010 Ryder Cup as a captain’s selection, and earning just under $2 million in 2010. He still is seeking that all important first victory though. Fowler is also a fantastic fit for Red Bull given his colorful outfits, background as a youth BMXer (which gives him that go-for-broke attitude), and overall swag.
In order to help promote Red Bull Capital Drive, Rickie Fowler and the Red Bull DC team are running a social media scavenger hunt in the streets of Washington, DC and the surrounding area with the help of Activ8Social. Golf fans should follow @RickieFowlerPGA and @Capital_Drive on Twitter and rush to the specified Foursquare locations for the opportunity to win a signed limited edition Red Bull / Rickie Fowler golf ball and more. Of course, there will be plenty of free Red Bull as well!
Here’s the best part of all. Fans that follow Rickie and/or Capital Drive on Twitter, show up at the specified Foursquare locations, and touch the Capital Drive flag also have an opportunity to win a golf ball that Rickie will actually chip into the fountain! Whichever fan owns the ball that Fowler chips closest to the hole wins the Grand Prize, which is a special gift from Rickie! All scavenger details are available on the Capital Drive Twitpic.
If you’re in the DC area be sure to follow @RickieFowlerPGA and @Capital_Drive on Twitter and come find us at the drop locations!
*UPDATE: What an amazing day! Nearly 50 participants from the Red Bull Capital Drive scavenger hunt were in the mix for the Grand Prize and Rickie Fowler amazed a crowd of hundreds by acing a hole-in-one less than 10 shots into the event! He even directly hit the pin and cup on a second attempt which is a testament to his short game precision. You can read more details from an article on SB Nation’s DC blog here.
