As a brand new addition to the Merriam-Webster dictionary in 2012, a meme is defined as “an idea, behavior, style, or usage that spreads from person to person within a culture.” And spread they have! Memes defined our 2012 and inspired us to take action with Kony 2012, break out in dance to Gangnam Style, and just laugh at Binders Full of Women.
There’s no doubt that memes will be making their way into 2013 and we can’t wait. From McKayla Maroney’s pursed lips, cold stare and folded arms to Gangnam Style’s over 4.4 million hits on YouTube, we could not get enough of our favorite memes. But how did all of these memes begin? We’ve loved and adapted these memes to our daily lives so many times over that we’ve almost forgotten where they even originated.
