[typography font="Lobster" size="26"][dropcap]T[/dropcap][/typography] his week's #SoMash is here with the top stories from last week, including Grey Poupon's "Society of Good Taste " Facebook app, second screen apps for fantasy sports, and the 50 most creative Facebook brand pages. Grey Poupon Ups the Ante on Assuming an Elite Image Everyone remembers the Grey Poupon commercial in the 1980s featuring the rich guys in the Rolls-Royces. (Or at least they remember the parodied version from Wayne's World.) Grey Poupon still maintains its air of sophistication and has transfered it to social media. Last week, the fancy mustard launched a Facebook application that scanned fans' profiles before admitting them to the "Society of Good Taste." The app checked the user's profile for proper grammar in status updates, the pages they have liked, books read, education, and photos. If a person received a score over certain percentile, they were admitted into the society.
Sara Braun, the marketing director at Kraft Foods, explained the strategy behind the campaign:We want to differentiate the brand and reinforce that when it comes to Dijon mustard that Grey Poupon is the leader in ‘taste.'
Fantasy Sports Take Advantage of the Second Screen
MLB and Viggle have both launched new fantasy apps to take advantage of the “second screens.” MLB has launched their new PrePlay app that allows fans to predict the outcome of the next play, while Viggle has added a new feature to it’s existing app that allows users to play fantasy football during select televised games.
MLB PrePlay attempts to engage fans during the ample amount of downtime in each inning. A common complaint with casual baseball fans is, “not enough actions during games.” Users can now guess everything from how many innings a pitcher will throw to what the result will be of the next pitch. Allowing users to guess every outcome will keep casual fans dialed in all game.
The flaw is PrePlay has yet to announce any prizing. There are points and messages but having nothing to play for except bragging rights may result in fans using their tablets and phones for other purposes during the game.
On the other hand Viggle, who rewards TV viewers with points for logging into their favorite shows, already has a reward system in place. Prizing consists of everything from a $5 Starbucks gift card for 12,500 points to a Royal Caribbean cruise for 4,000,000 points. You can now gain even more points using their new MyGuy fantasy app. Checking in for tonight’s Broncos Falcons game will net you 150 points, and allow you the chance to earn even more points playing the new app.
MyGuy targets fantasy football fans with a new strategy of changing players mid game. Traditional fantasy football makes you lock in your picks before the game, and if someone is off on Sunday there’s no option to substitute him. MyGuy allows you to change players periodically and if you want to top the leader boards you have to do more than just trust the star quarterback.
